Call For Abstracts
Sisters Inside Inc is an independent community organisation in Meanjin (Brisbane), Australia, that works with and for criminalised and imprisoned women and girls, and their families. Between 28 – 30 October 2020, we are hosting our 10th international conference in Meanjin – Imagining Abolition… A world without prisons #freeher
A limited number of presentation opportunities and workshops are available in the sessions.
We invite abstracts on the conference theme and related issues, including: approaches to end the prison-industrial complex; decolonisation strategies; over-imprisonment of First Nations peoples; movement building strategies for challenging a carceral society; building coalitions to organise, advocate and support people impacted by criminalisation and imprisonment; criminalisation and imprisonment of survivors of domestic and family violence; systemic racism, misogyny and sexism within the prison industrial complex; school to prison pipeline and the criminalisation of girls; transformative justice; state violence and deaths in custody; the welfare-industrial complex; alternatives to prison; decarceration strategies; organising around the experiences and needs of criminalised and imprisoned LGBTQI, non-binary and gender non-conforming people; ending the violence of policing; legislative advocacy; failure of prison reform; and local and global abolition innovations.
Sisters Inside reserves the right to accept or reject your proposal at our discretion. In particular, proposals which do not contribute to the conference theme – Imagining Abolition …. A world without prisons #freeher – are unlikely to be accepted. Most presentations will be 20 minutes long and will be part of a panel of presentations. Workshops will be longer – 45 minutes.
